God is dead!

The culmination of the philosophical evolution initiated primarily by Kant (1724–1804) is the appalling cry uttered by Nietzsche (1844–1900): "God is dead!" Upon this cry—an echo of the one uttered by Satan before the creation of the world, "Non serviam" ("I will not serve")—the Earthly Babylon has been founded and sustained; it is the city of love for self to the point of contempt for God, locked in an eternal struggle against the Heavenly Jerusalem, the city of love for God to the point of contempt for self.

The alleged death of God has given rise to the Übermensch (Superman): a pure will dependent on no one and nothing, serving as the beginning, means, and end of its own decisions. Yet, because he is an essentially religious being, the Übermensch exchanges the Lord of Truth for the idols of materialism and hedonism, and the freedom of the children of God for the dictatorship of relativism, marching toward despair and death.

The root of all these evils is pride—a vice that, according to Saint Thomas, was remedied by the Incarnation of Jesus Christ our Lord. Though He possessed the glorious nature of God, He did not deem equality with God a prize to be grasped; instead, He emptied Himself, taking the nature of a servant and becoming like men. In human form, He humbled Himself, becoming obedient even unto death—death on a cross (Phil 2:1–11)—to teach us the value of humility.

For this reason, founders of great orders, such as Saint Benedict and Saint Bernard, proposed rules of life for their monks based on degrees of humility; Saint Ignatius of Loyola, in his Spiritual Exercises, extended these recommendations to all Catholics. Let us ask the Lord to grant us the grace to follow His example and always do His most holy will, and to secure for us the supreme freedom enjoyed by those who hold Him as the light of their lives.
