The Supreme Desappointment of God

IIt seems foolish to send one’s own son on the very mission that had already caused the persecution, mistreatment, and death of previous envoys. Yet such is the madness of God’s love: when the fullness of time had come, He sent His Only Begotten Son to the vineyard of Israel, even though His people had rejected and killed the prophets.

The Owner of the Vineyard had chosen and cultivated it over two millennia—through the liberation from Egypt, the graces in the desert, the Covenant, the Tabernacle, the Law, the conquest of the Promised Land, and the kingship of David. It had grown, extending its branches from Lebanon to Egypt and from the Jordan to the Mediterranean, awaiting the great hour dreamed of by God: the Grape Harvest.

But instead of the sweetness of grapes, the divine Owner received the sourness of infidelity, betrayal, and deicide at the hands of the leaders and a large part of the people who, in their arrogance and unbelief, killed the Son. Having witnessed God’s disappointment throughout the Old Testament, we now behold His supreme disappointment: the prophets had failed in their mission, and Christ Himself also fails. Who, then, could possibly succeed?

Yet, although Israel’s defection sealed its barrenness, it opened the doors of salvation to the Gentiles. As Saint Jerome says, "He was cast out of the vineyard and killed there, so that the Gentiles might gather Him in and the vineyard be entrusted to others." As the inheritance of Judah passed to the nations, nothing was lost; rather, everything was transformed: the Vineyard is now the Church; the winepress—formerly the vessel of the prophetic spirit—has become the vessel of the Holy Spirit among the Christian faithful; The tower, which once guarded only Jerusalem—that watchtower of the Mosaic Law—now protects the Catholic Church, the watchtower of the Gospel Law visible throughout the world.

"Apart from Me you can do nothing", says the Lord; and in these words the history of Israel is summed up—a history of human failure and divine disappointment. Jesus Christ brought this history to a close when, lifted up on the Cross by the wicked vinedressers, He transformed His death into the act of love that God had been unable to obtain from Judah.

Let us ask the Lord—the true Vine—to allow us to remain always united to Him and to accept, with resignation and surrender, the pruning that comes into our lives so that we may bear greater fruit.
