El símbolo por excelencia del suplicio más terrible e ignominioso, es la cruz. Sin embargo, y a pesar de que por eso mismo la iconografía cristiana tardó cuatro siglos en comenzar a representarla, la Iglesia canta el triunfo de la Cruz exaltando al Rey que sobre ella está clavado.
Dicen los santos padres que se extiende los brazos al orar imitando la cruz de Cristo; que a ella hay que atarse, como Ulises ante el canto de las sirenas, cuando los peligros del mundo arrecian; que es la nueva serpiente exaltada en el leño, cuya vista sana nuestras heridas. Debemos cargar con alegría esa cruz, ejemplo de caridad, de paciencia, de humildad, de obediencia, de menosprecio de las cosas terrenas, haciendo nuestra la voluntad de Dios, para seguir a Jesucristo y lograr la salvación.
El día de la Parusía, cuando vuelva el Señor para juzgar al mundo con vara de hierro, aparecerá en los espacios, cual relámpago, el signo glorioso de la Cruz. Que este misterio, ante el cual se doblan todas las rodillas en el cielo, en la tierra y en los infiernos, haga que nuestra Eucaristía tenga sabor a madero triunfante, camino de victoria.
In 615, the Persian King Khosrow II conquered Jerusalem and carried off, as a trophy, the True Cross, which had been discovered in 325 by Saint Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine. Fourteen years later, after defeating Khosrow, the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius triumphantly restored the Holy Cross on September 14, 629. Such is the origin of the feast the Church celebrates today.
The cross is the quintessential symbol of the most terrible and ignominious form of execution. Yet—even though Christian iconography took four centuries to begin depicting it for that very reason—the Church sings of the triumph of the Cross by exalting the King who is nailed upon it.
The Church Fathers tell us that we extend our arms in prayer to imitate the cross of Christ; that we must bind ourselves to it—as Ulysses did before the song of the sirens—when the dangers of the world intensify; and that it is the new serpent raised upon the wood, the sight of which heals our wounds. We must joyfully bear that cross—an example of charity, patience, humility, obedience, and detachment from earthly things—making God's will our own, in order to follow Jesus Christ and attain salvation.
On the day of the Parousia, when the Lord returns to judge the world with a rod of iron, the glorious sign of the Cross will appear in the heavens like a flash of lightning. May this mystery—before which every knee in heaven, on earth, and under the earth bends—imbue our Eucharist with the savor of the triumphant wood, the path to victory.
