Este deber de corrección compete muy especialmente a quien en la Iglesia tiene autoridad, por haber sido puesto como atalaya para advertir al rebaño la proximidad del lobo. Sin embargo no son pocos los que, poseyéndola legítimamente, abdican de su obligación por comodidad o para evitar la enemistad del mundo, callando como perros mudos y haciéndose acreedores de la advertencia del Señor por boca del profeta Ezequiel: "Te pediré cuenta de la sangre del malvado".
Perdonar las ofensas no significa andar del brazo de los corrompidos, escandalosos y blasfemos que pululan por doquier; pues no se puede estar en connivencia con los enemigos de la Cruz de Cristo, a los cuales se tendrá por paganos, si se obstinan en desoír la voz correctora de la Iglesia que tiene poder de atar y desatar.
En medio de la comunidad orante de los creyentes que unen sus voces en una única e idéntica armonía, profesando la misma Fe y participando del mismo Sacrificio, Cristo se hace presente, como lo ha prometido, asegurando la caridad y la eficacia de la oración común para obtener las gracias que solicita ante el Padre Celestial, que nos ve con su Hijo en medio. Por eso es tan grave el daño que infligen a la Iglesia las querellas que, en su seno, suscita el padre de la mentira.
Roguemos al Señor para que mantenga firmemente unido a su rebaño por la Caridad, enseñándole a pedir con insistencia solamente lo que le conviene y del modo que le sea más agradable.
Correcting someone who errs is perhaps the most difficult of the seven works of charity, due to the false sense of human respect that usually influences us. Nevertheless, the Lord will hold us accountable if we let a sinner die without warning them of their sin.
This duty of correction falls especially to those in authority within the Church, having been placed as watchmen to warn the flock of the approaching wolf. However, there are many who, legitimately possessing this authority, abdicate their obligation for convenience or to avoid the world's enmity, remaining silent like dumb dogs and thus earning the Lord's warning through the prophet Ezekiel: "I will hold you accountable for the blood of the wicked."
Forgiving offenses does not mean walking arm in arm with the corrupt, scandalous, and blasphemous who abound everywhere; For one cannot be in league with the enemies of the Cross of Christ, who will be considered pagans if they persist in ignoring the corrective voice of the Church, which has the power to bind and loose.
In the midst of the praying community of believers who unite their voices in a single, identical harmony, professing the same Faith and participating in the same Sacrifice, Christ makes himself present, as he has promised, ensuring the charity and efficacy of common prayer to obtain the graces he requests from the Heavenly Father, who sees us with his Son in our midst. This is why the quarrels stirred up within the Church by the father of lies are so grave.
Let us pray to the Lord that he may keep his flock firmly united through Charity, teaching them to ask persistently only for what is truly good for them and in the way that is most pleasing to them.
